Millennial-old Traditions

Viticulture has been celebrated as an integral part of Sicilian culture for thousands of years. Today Sicily’s wines are of the highest quality and are appreciated all over the world.

Sicily has the ideal terrior and climatic conditions to make excellent quality wines.  It is here that Stefano Girelli has two estates Santa Tresa and Az. Agricola Cortese, with a total of 63 hectares which are organically cultivated, principally with indigenous grape varietals such as Frappato, Nero d’Avola, Grillo, with a few other local varieties.

Cerasuolo di Vittoria and Frappato

Sicily’s only DOCG, Cerasuolo di Vittoria is something special, from its typical red cherry colour, to the fruity aroma, to the typical red cherry colour, to the velvety texture, it is the pride and joy of many winemakers.

Cerasuolo di Vittoria was born at the same time as the city of Vittoria, when the Countess Vittoria Colonna donated a hectare of land to the 75 founding colonisers of the city on the basis that they would plant an additional hectare of vineyard.  Legend has it that the name comes from a shrub that bore wild black cherries.  However, the most likely hypothesis that unites the wines called “Cerasuoli” is that the name comes from the colours and scents of the cherries that distinguish the wine.

As for Frappato, it is a vine that is indigenous to the Vittoria region where it has been cultivated since the end of the seventeenth century. The resulting wine is intense, with prominent aromas of flowers and fruits on the nose, together with some spicy notes.  On the palate is it medium rich and has a good balance of tannins.
